Four New Health Care Agencies

Under Alberta’s refocused health care system, four fully integrated provincial health agencies have been created to oversee the priority sectors of primary care, acute care, assisted living, and mental health and addiction.

Primary Care Alberta

Primary care is the front door into our health system. It’s the essential conversations with your family doctor about regular screening, routine health maintenance, prescription renewals, medication management, family planning, and everything in between.

Primary Care Alberta is the provincial health agency responsible for delivering and overseeing
the coordination and delivery of primary health care services across the province. PCA is
accountable to the Ministry of Primary and Preventative Health Services.

Acute Care Alberta

Acute Care Alberta is the provincial health agency responsible for acute care. It became a legal
entity on February 1, 2025, and began operating in Spring 2025. Acute Care Alberta is
accountable to the Ministry of Hospital and Surgical Health Services.

Assisted Living Alberta

Assisted Living Alberta (ALA) is the provincial health agency responsible for overseeing a comprehensive, holistic system of care with a full range of wrap-around services, including: medical and non-medical supports, home care, community care, social services, and continuing care homes. ALA became a legal entity April 1st 2025 and will be fully operational by Fall 2025. It is accountable to the Ministry of Assisted Living and Social Services.
