Food Security

Food security refers to “when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life” (Statistics Canada, 2024).

As of 2023, Alberta had the highest rate of households facing food insecurity among the ten provinces in Canada at 20.3% (Statistics Canada, 2024). One in five children living in the province lives in a food-insecure household. Households with a lone female parent are the most vulnerable (Made in Canada, 2024).

Food insecurity has no bias, it can affect anyone.

Some suggestions to make your dollar stretch further:

  • Meal plan based on sale items
  • Bulk up meat with stuffing, bread crumbs, lentils or chickpeas
  • Shop in-season and local
  • Buy marked-down foods and freeze them
  • Buy plant-based proteins (lentils, chickpeas, black beans, eggs, milk ). They sustain appetite longer, have several health benefits and are more affordable
  • Buy frozen fruit vs fresh fruit – lasts longer/less expensive
  • Ask local grocer if they have discounted areas for overstock or food that is approaching expiration date
  • Canadian Seniors Directory provides a list of deals and discounts for food and grocery
  • Colleges and universities offer food banks/food stamps/budgeting support
  • Local churches often provide food support
  • Access local food bank and soup kitchens
    (Eat This Not That, 2024)

If food insecurity does not affect you directly, consider other ways to make a positive impact such as volunteering at the local food bank, community kitchen or by educating yourself and others on ways to limit food waste. Some examples include: keeping food fresh longer by washing and cutting up fresh vegetables and storing them in airtight containers or try buying fruits and vegetables at varying ripeness, remember the freezer is your friend (UBC, 2024).
