Heat Exhaustion

July is here and it’s time for some safe, fun in the sun! Let’s discuss heat exhaustion; what it is, how to recognize it, treat it, and prevent it.

Heat exhaustion happens when the body loses excessive water and salt by sweating too much (1). Heat exhaustion will happen quickly when the body is sweating in a hot environment in which the body can’t cool down fast enough (1).

Signs and symptoms (2):

  • High body temperature
  • Confusion and lack of coordination
  • Skin rash
  • Muscle cramps
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Heavy sweating
  • Headache
  • Rapid breathing and heartbeat
  • Extreme thirst
  • Dark urine and decreased urination

Treatment will vary depending on severity of heat exhaustion. Remove yourself or others from the hot environment and seek out a cool environment for at least 24 hrs (3). Replenish your body with water and electrolyte drinks such as a sports drink with no caffeine or alcohol (3).

Heat exhaustion can be prevented by avoiding long exposure in hot environments, staying hydrated with water and electrolyte drinks, wearing loose breathable clothing, and staying cool in air conditioned spaces (3).

Important to note: “heat stroke” is not the same as heat exhaustion (3).

In the event you are worried about yourself, or someone else experiencing heat exhaustion call 811 for further advice or call 911 for medical emergencies.
